Good eggs are my favourite clients

I’ve been chatting to other small agency types recently about how we onboard new clients and hand-hold throughout the PR process.

My clientele is super mixed – from early childhood education to male incontinence products and everything in-between. In some cases Contentment (myself, a social media manager and a comms executive) is an adjunct to an existing marketing team – in others, we’re considered the entire team!

Sometimes we work on short projects and other times, I’m on call via an always-on retainer.

In all circumstances, there are behaviours that make my job more successful, and behaviours that make it challenging.

Good eggs attract other good eggs

I’m not supposed to have favourites, I’m sure (it’s a bit like choosing whether Whittaker’s Blondie or Creamy Milk is better. Impossible) but here’s a checklist if you’re vying for Client of the Year.

Have fun with me. I love to get creative, chat, laugh and push the boundaries of what might be possible, if you’ll let me.

Trust the process. I know PR, in particular, can seem like a dark art! But let me be your guide and we will get there.  Remember, this is what I do day in and day out, so I know the ropes.

Respect boundaries. I’ll usually say yes if you need extra help, because I really want to see you succeed. But if I don’t, or if there’s significant scope creep and I need to charge you a bit more, please accept that.

Make time for the meeting. Endlessly rescheduling or making a habit of turning up late tells me you don’t prioritise our work together

Remember the objective. PR is great for growing your brand reputation. And if your reputation is stronger and your brand offering is clear, sales will come. But not overnight.

Tell me when something is bothering you. I can’t make it right if I don’t know about it. My Big Girl Pants are always on – I work in PR where rejection happens daily, if not hourly!

Tell me when I’m doing great. Words of affirmation are my love language. I thrive when I know how you feel.

Now, it’s your turn. How can I be your favourite consultant? Drop me a line here: fiona@contentment.co.nz
